Born November 4, 1955 in Iron Mountain, Michigan, Mariucci forged a lifelong friendship with future Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo, becoming teammates and roommates at both Iron Mountain High School and Northern Michigan University. As a three-time All-America Division II quarterback, Mariucci led the Wildcats to the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1975 as a sophomore, securing three postseason victories. He briefly signed with Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League in May 1978 but was released one month later.
